Union Cabinet Approves Rs 22,864 Crore Shillong–Silchar Corridor- Sugarcane Price, Caste Census Among 3 Key Takeaways

Speaking on the decisions made by the Union Cabinet, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "The Union Cabinet has approved a high-speed corridor highway from Shillong to Silchar to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 22,864 crore."

After the cabinet meeting held on April 30, 2025, the Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made several announcements during the press briefing. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the proposal for the Development, Maintenance, and Management of a four-lane Greenfield Access Controlled high-speed corridor highway from Shillong to Silchar. Not only this but there were several major decisions taken by the Union Cabinet.

Speaking on the decisions made by the Union Cabinet, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The Union Cabinet has approved a high-speed corridor highway from Shillong to Silchar to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 22,864 crore.”

Not only this, but there are decisions taken for the sugarcane farmers. Speaking on the decision, Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “A Fair and remunerative price for Sugarcane for the sugar season 2025-26 has been fixed at Rs 355 per quintal. This is the benchmark price below which it cannot be bought.”

During the press briefing, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided today that Caste enumeration should be included in the forthcoming census.”
