UN Security Council Voting

The 15-member council voted 13 to 0 in favour of the resolution, with abstentions by Russia and China, which declined to use their veto power to block the measure. The main intention 0f the resolution is to add international legitimacy to US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan, parts of which formed the basis of the ceasefire that took effect in the Gaza Strip last month.

Major points in Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan

  • Gaza to be transformed into a deradicalised, “terror-free” area- the region will pose no danger to neighbouring regions
  • The rebuilding of the territory to improve the lives of Gaza residents, who have gone through severe suffering
  • The main point – Stoppage of fighting immediately, if both parties accept the plan. Israeli troops will pull back to an agreed line in preparation for a hostage exchange
  • All the military activity- airstrikes and artillery fire- will be halted, and front lines will remain fixed until the conditions for a full, phased withdrawal are fulfilled
  • Once the agreement is accepted, a large amount of humanitarian aid will start reaching Gaza right away. At the very least, the aid will be equal to what was promised in the 19 January 2025 humanitarian deal. This includes repairing water, electricity, and sewage systems, fixing hospitals and bakeries, and bringing in machines and tools needed to remove debris and reopen roads.
