Suresh Gopi, the inaugural BJP MP from Kerala who took the oath as a Union Minister of State on Sunday, is expected to step down from his ministerial role.

In an interview with a regional channel in Delhi following the ceremony, he revealed that he had not pursued the ministerial position and hopes to be relieved of his responsibilities soon.

Suresh Gopi explained that he wishes to step down from his ministerial position because he had committed to working on several films. He added that he would continue to serve as the MP for Thrissur.

Suresh Gopi made history by winning the Thrissur parliamentary seat, becoming the first BJP MP from Kerala, and defeating the Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate V S Sunilkumar by 74,686 votes.

Suresh Gopi stated, ‘My goal is to serve as a Member of Parliament. I haven’t requested anything; I had mentioned that I don’t require this position. I believe I will be released from this role soon. There are no issues with the voters of Thrissur. They are aware of this, and as an MP, I will sincerely work for their benefit. I must continue making my films, no matter what.’

Ex-Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament

Suresh Gopi, victorious in the Thrissur constituency, witnessed the seat being claimed by Congress in the previous election cycle. Preceding his tenure as a Lok Sabha MP, Suresh Gopi served as a Rajya Sabha MP. His appointment to the Rajya Sabha occurred in 2016, with his tenure extending until 2022.

Playing a Significant Role in the Film Industry

Suresh Gopi originates from Alappuzha, Kerala, born in 1958. He completed his undergraduate studies in Science at Kollam and obtained a master’s degree in English. Suresh has been involved in the film industry since early on. Beginning his career as a child actor, he later transitioned into working on numerous films. Suresh Gopi has notably portrayed leading characters in various films and was honored with the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1998 movie ‘Kaliyattam’.

Additionally, he has a longstanding stint as a host for television shows.
