Trump flipped through the book and showed Prime Minister Modi pictures from the Namaste Trump rally during his 2020 visit to India. He also showed a photo of himself with First Lady Melania Trump in front of the Taj Mahal.
Trump told the reporters that “It’s a great honour to have PM Modi of India. He is a great friend of mine for a long time. We have had a wonderful relationship and we kept the relationship during our 4-year period,”
Even though Trump and Modi have a good relationship, Trump brought up concerns about India’s high tariffs. He said, “We are being reciprocal with India. Whatever India charges, we charge them.”
However, both leaders agreed to have trade talks to sort out these issues and were hopeful they could finish the talks soon. Trump mentioned plans for “some great trade deals” between the US and India. A senior official from Trump’s team told Reuters that an agreement might be reached by the end of the year.
At the press conference, PM Modi praised Trump’s leadership, saying, “One thing I really appreciate and learn from President Trump is that he always puts his country’s interest first. Like him, I also put India’s national interest above everything else.”
Sources told Reuters that India’s recent trade concessions were a “gift” to Trump to help reduce tensions. A Trump aide mentioned that the president sees defense and energy sales to India as a way to reduce the US trade deficit. The US President also said that his government was ready to sell advanced F-35 fighter jets to India.
They also talked about working together on new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and nuclear energy.
