Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), is suspected to be involved in a major operation in Bangladesh. Reports suggest that an ISI team has been moving across Dhaka and other key cities, holding confidential meetings with military officers, government representatives and officials from major agencies. The team is also said to be monitoring areas along the India–Bangladesh border, raising fresh security concerns for New Delhi.
These developments are significant because Pakistan-based agencies have, in the past, used Bangladeshi territory for activities targeting India. The latest movements have therefore triggered worry within Indian security circles.
Journalist Claims ISI Team Reached Dhaka on November 14
Renowned Bangladeshi journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury publicly revealed details of ISI’s alleged activities. In a social media post, he claimed that:
- An 8-member ISI team arrived in Dhaka on 14 November
- The team is expected to stay until 25 November
- The reason for such a long stay remains unclear
- ISI officials reportedly used rented helicopters to visit sensitive border areas between Bangladesh and India
Choudhury further questioned why foreign intelligence officials were being allowed access to such high-security zones.
Political Turmoil in Bangladesh and Pakistan’s Growing Influence
Bangladesh has been facing political instability since August last year, when large-scale protests led to the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina. An interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus took over.
Since then, according to Choudhury, Yunus has kept a distance from New Delhi while showing greater openness towards Islamabad. He has repeatedly criticised the growing influence of Pakistan in Dhaka’s political and strategic space.
Choudhury alleges that ISI is attempting to rebuild its support network by backing certain organisations and political groups, including entities connected with Jamaat-e-Islami. He claims Yunus is indirectly supporting this shift.
Concerns Over Possible Terror Links and Sleeper Cells
Choudhury also warns that ISI may be working with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to create or activate sleeper cells aimed at targeting India. According to him, preparations may already be underway in sensitive areas, especially near regions on the Bangladesh-India border that lack strong fencing.
Such possibilities, if true, would pose a significant threat to India’s security, as the long and porous border is difficult to monitor effectively.
India Watching the Situation Closely
Although there is no official statement yet from Indian authorities on these claims, the reported movements of Pakistani intelligence personnel inside Bangladesh are being viewed seriously. Any increase in ISI activity near the Indian border naturally raises strategic concerns.
