Nepal is grappling with a devastating earthquake that has left a trail of destruction, claiming the lives of at least 132 people and leaving 140 individuals injured, as reported by Nepal Police. The nation is reeling from the aftermath of this catastrophic event.

This powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.4, struck on a fateful Friday, leaving communities in distress. Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, commonly known as ‘Prachanda,’ has swiftly responded to the crisis, rushing to the severely affected Jajarkot district to extend his support to those who have been affected.

As the clock struck 3 am local time on Saturday, it was apparent that Jajarkot and West Rukum had borne the brunt of the disaster, with 92 casualties reported in Jajarkot alone, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police of Jajarkot district, Santosh Roka, as detailed by The Kathmandu Post. Among the victims, the Deputy Mayor of Nalgad Municipality, Sarita Singh, has also lost her life in this tragic incident.

In response to the situation, authorities have been swiftly mobilizing resources to aid the affected areas. Ambulances have been deployed around the clock near the helipad of Nepalgunj Airport and military barracks to ensure that those injured in the earthquake receive the medical attention they need promptly.

Nepal’s Prime Minister, Prachanda, expressed profound grief over the loss of human lives and the extensive material damage caused by the earthquake. The Prime Minister’s Office released an official statement, stating, “Honorable Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed his deep sorrow over the human and material damage caused by the earthquake at Ramidanda in Jajarkot at 11:47 on Friday night and has mobilized all three security agencies for the immediate rescue and relief of the injured.”

The intensity of the earthquake was such that it reverberated far beyond Nepal’s borders, sending tremors felt by residents of Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Faridabad in India. In response to the quake, people living in neighbouring districts, such as Maharajgang, Gorakhpur, and Champaran, were also prompted to leave their homes in search of safety.

The aftermath of this natural disaster serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities in earthquake-prone regions. It underscores the importance of preparedness, prompt response, and international cooperation in times of crisis, as Nepal begins the challenging process of recovery and rehabilitation in the wake of this tragic event.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
