At least nine people have tragically lost their lives in a bus accident in Maharashtra’s Gondia district today. The incident occurred around noon on the Gondia-Kohmara State Highway near Khajri village when a Shivshahi state transport bus, traveling from Bhandara to Gondia, overturned while attempting to avoid a collision with a motorcycle.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver swerved sharply to prevent hitting the bike, which appeared suddenly around a sharp turn. This maneuver caused the bus to lose control and overturn, leading to immediate chaos as passengers were thrown from their seats. Many were trapped under the bus, and emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the injured and recover the deceased.
As of now, approximately 30 passengers have sustained injuries, with some in critical condition. The injured are being treated at KTS District Hospital in Gondia. Rescue operations involved police and ambulances working tirelessly to transport victims for medical care.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed condolences and announced an immediate compensation of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family. He emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting those affected by this devastating accident. The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including efforts to locate the driver, who reportedly fled the scene following the incident.
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety in India, particularly involving public transport vehicles. As investigations proceed, local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and prioritize safety on the roads.
