Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced on Tuesday that they will back Congress leader K Suresh as the Opposition-led INDIA bloc’s candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker election in Parliament. The decision from Mamata Banerjee’s party came after they initially expressed discontent for not being consulted by Congress before selecting K Suresh.

Trinamool Congress decided to support K Suresh after a 20-minute phone call between Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee. Rahul Gandhi, who was appointed as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha on Monday, also met TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in person at Parliament. TMC, initially critical of Congress’s unilateral decision to field K Suresh, reiterated to the Congress that decisions within the INDIA bloc should involve all members.

On Tuesday night, a meeting occurred at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence with Derek O’Brien and Kalyan Banerjee representing the TMC. This was followed by an internal TMC meeting this morning at the Old Parliament building in Delhi, attended by Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, Sudip Bandhopadhyay, and Abhishek Banerjee.
