The BJP’s central observers have landed in Chhattisgarh to finalize the appointment of the state’s chief minister following the party’s victory over the Congress in the recent assembly elections. Dushyant Gautam, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Arun Munda, along with state BJP chief Arun Sao and state in-charge Om Mathur, are gathered in Raipur for this crucial task.
After securing triumph in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, the BJP has been actively strategizing to select chief ministers for these states. The corridors of power have been abuzz with discussions, drawing in numerous leaders to meet BJP chief JP Nadda at his Delhi residence. A pivotal meeting involving the newly-elected 54 MLAs is anticipated today, potentially marking the denouement in the quest for the top position.

Om Mathur conveyed to PTI that the party’s observers’ arrival and the subsequent decisions made during the meeting would shape the course of action. He emphasized the adherence to the established protocols of the BJP’s parliamentary board in the process of appointing the chief minister.
In the Chhattisgarh elections, BJP secured 54 seats out of 90, with Congress trailing at 35 seats, while the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) clinched one seat.
Amid speculation, the likelihood of an Other Backward Classes (OBC) or tribal chief minister has been discussed should Raman Singh, the former three-time chief minister, not be chosen. Contenders from the tribal community such as Vishnu Deo, Renuka Singh, Ramvichar Netam, Lata Usendi, and Gomti Sai are under consideration. Additionally, OBC representatives like Arun Sao and OP Choudhary are also among the potential candidates.
The appointed chief minister in Chhattisgarh will assume a pivotal role in the BJP’s upcoming national election campaign. The BJP aims to further weaken the Congress’s presence in the state during the Lok Sabha elections after securing nine out of the 11 seats in the 2019 election, while the Congress managed only two.
