New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor met party president Sonia Gandhi at her residence on Monday.

Tharoor, earlier this month, refused to drop himself from the race for the post of party president. However, it is not yet clear what led to this meeting between the two.

The Lok Sabha MP from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram tweeted, “I am happy… to go ahead” and pledged support to the Congress’s Udaipur New Resolution Declaration, which expresses its commitment to free and fair internal elections.

The petition had over 650 signature at the time he posted it on Twitter.

“I welcome this petition that is being circulated by a group of young Congress members, seeking constructive reforms in the Party. It has gathered over 650 signatures so far. I am happy to endorse it and to go beyond it,” he said.

The notification for the election of the Congress President will be issued on September 22 and the process of filing nominations will continue from September 24 to 30. In case of more than one candidate, voting will be held on October 17 and results will be declared on October 19.

Shashi Tharoor is part of the G-23 group of leaders, who voiced for leadership and structural changes in the party, after a series of electoral defeats. The G-23 has been critical of the Gandhi family which has given rise to internal strife.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot time and again reiterated his point of making Rahul Gandhi the Congress President.

In the important meeting of the Congress, a unanimous resolution has been passed to make Rahul Gandhi the President.

According to the spokesperson of the party, Chief Minister Gehlot said in the meeting that his feeling is that Rahul Gandhi should take over the reins of the party by becoming the President of Congress.
