Tensions are rising in Jammu and Kashmir as intelligence reports warn of a possible resurgence in terrorist activities. Six months after Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) are reportedly planning a fresh wave of coordinated strikes in the Union Territory.
According to reports, preparations are underway to target Jammu and Kashmir again, amid a dangerous surge in Pakistan-backed terrorist activities there. LeT and JeM have long been Islamabad’s covert weapons of attack. Now, these terrorist organisations are mobilising for a new wave of attacks with the support of Pakistan’s Special Services Group (SSG) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Drone recce
Since September, there has been a surge in activity along infiltration routes on the Line of Control (LoC). Drones operated by a Lashkar-e-Taiba unit led by the notorious Shamsher have been observed hovering over sensitive hills, reportedly scouting locations for potential suicide attacks or aerial weapon launches.
Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) deployed in PoK
Reports suggests that Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) has been redeployed to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The BAT is a lethal mix of former SSG commandos and trained terrorists. These activities indicate a possible increase in cross-border raids.
PoK Secret Conference
Secret conferences were held in PoK in October, attended by top officials from Jamaat-e-Islami, Hizbul Mujahideen, and the ISI. Reports suggest that plans were finalised to revive dormant terrorist groups, with former commanders receiving monthly stipends and orders to reactivate sleeper cells. Additionally, directives were issued to avenge losses faced during Operation Sindoor.
ISI back to old ways
Facing diplomatic isolation and domestic unrest, the ISI appears to be reverting to its old strategy, exporting instability to derail India’s peace. Amid this, a dangerous new front is emerging. Reportedly, LeT terrorists are rebuilding their human intelligence network in the Kashmir Valley, mapping local supporters and assets. Narco-terrorism and arms smuggling routes, reminiscent of recent patterns in Punjab and Rajasthan are being expanded to raise funds for operations.
Changes in infiltration pattern
India’s Trishul tri-service exercise is currently underway along the western borders. While infiltration usually decreases during winter, analysts warn that terrorists have changed their pattern. They suggest that terrorists are preparing to infiltrate under the cover of severe cold. Reportedly, New Delhi has sounded the alarm, with officials describing the intelligence as a serious warning, and the Northern Command placed on high alert.
