Every year, 5th September is celebrated across India with a deep sense of respect and gratitude as students come together to observe Teachers’ Day, a heartfelt tribute to educators who not only impart knowledge but also guide and shape lives. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice President and second President of India, and a distinguished educationist deeply revered by his students.
This special day is a reminder of the important contribution teachers make to the growth and future of students. Flowers, sweets and small gestures of gratitude fill the air in schools with love and respect. From handwritten messages to heartfelt ‘Thank Yous’, the feeling of respect for teachers is visible everywhere.
This tradition started during Dr Radhakrishnan’s presidential tenure (1962–1967). When his students expressed a desire to celebrate his birth anniversary, he suggested celebrating it as Teachers’ Day in honour of all teachers. His humble approach established this day as a special celebration across the country.
Throughout his life, Dr. Radhakrishnan was known as a brilliant student and a respected teacher. When he was the second President of India in 1962, his students wished to celebrate his birthday in a special way. He suggested that September 5 be celebrated as ‘Teachers’ Day’ to honour the important contribution of teachers to society.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was born in a simple Telugu Brahmin family and completed his education with the help of scholarships. He obtained a postgraduate degree in philosophy and published a book titled ‘The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore’ in 1917. He served as the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936 and in 1939 he succeeded Madan Mohan Malaviya as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
Since then, educational institutions in India celebrate Teachers’ Day every year on September 5 to honour the invaluable contribution of teachers who guide young minds and shape the future of the country.
