Tamil Nadu Stampede: At least 39 people were killed, and 51 were injured on Saturday after a stampede occurred during (TVK) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay’s rally in Karur district. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin confirmed that 39 people, including 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls, lost their lives in the incident, while 51 people, including 26 men and 25 women, are receiving intensive treatment.
About 27,000 people had gathered at the venue, where Actor Vijay was set to address after his Namakkal rally. However, his arrival was delayed by over seven hours, and by then the crowd had grown beyond control. According to reports, several attendees fainted amid the chaos and were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
CM Stalin visited the Government Medical College and Hospital and met the families of victims and those injured late Saturday night. He expressed deep shock over the tragedy in a post on the social media platform X. He had ordered a probe into the Karur stampede by a one-member panel.
On the incident, the Tamil Nadu CM said, “The truth will come out through the inquiry commission. I do not wish to say anything with a political motive. Once the truth is revealed through the inquiry commission, strict action will definitely be taken.” Meanwhile, the bodies of victims of the Karur stampede incident were handed over to their family members after the postmortem examination.
Actor Vijay also expressed grief over the tragic incident at his rally in Karur. “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital,” Vijay posted on X.
