Tamil Nadu Liquor Case: 10 people, including three women, died after allegedly drinking spurious liquor in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu. Treatment of 33 people who were victims of spurious liquor is also going on in the hospital. Taking action in the matter, the police suspended 3 inspectors and 4 sub-inspectors from both the districts.
According to information, six people, residents of Ekkiarkuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district, died on Sunday. In Maduranthagam of Chengalpattu district, two people died on Friday and a couple died on Sunday, officials said.
According to the police, more than two dozen sick people are undergoing treatment in the hospital after drinking spurious liquor. According to the doctors, the condition of the people being treated is out of danger.

Police action
Following the incident, Inspector General of Police (North) N Kannan assured appropriate action and said that all the 10 victims had consumed alcohol possibly laced with ethanol-methanol substances.
He said that two separate incidents of death due to spurious liquor have been reported in the northern region of Tamil Nadu and so far the police have not found any evidence of connection between the two incidents, but the police are conducting a probe to find out any possible link. Six people were admitted to the hospital at Ekkiyarkuppam village in Villupuram district near Marakkanam after they complained of vomiting, burning sensation in the eyes and dizziness. Addressing a press conference in Villupuram on Sunday, the IG said that 33 people were undergoing treatment. He informed that a person identified as Amaran has been arrested in connection with the incident and spurious liquor has also been seized from his possession. IG N Kannan told about the second incident in Chengalpattu district that four people have died here. A case was reported from Chithmoor in Chengalpattu district, where two people of the same family died. While another person was undergoing treatment in the hospital. Initially we thought it could be a suicide attempt due to a family dispute, but after seeing his symptoms, we suspected it to be a spurious liquor incident.
IG said that after the death of two people in Chengalpattu, an alert was issued in the area. Later, two more people with similar symptoms were admitted to the hospital. A total of four people died, while the fifth is undergoing treatment. The post-mortem of the body has been done and one of the accused Ammavasai has been arrested in connection with the incident.
He also referred to the preliminary investigation and found that all the deceased might have consumed denatured alcohol mixed with ethanol and methanol which may have been the cause of death. “Some accused in both the incidents are absconding and special teams have been formed to trace and nab the accused,” he said.
Disciplinary action has also been taken against the officials concerned, he added. The IG said, “In Vilupuram Marakkanam, 2 inspectors and 2 sub-inspectors have been suspended. Similarly, an inspector and 2 sub-inspectors have been suspended in connection with the Chengalpattu incident.”
