Former Mizoram Governor and noted senior advocate Swaraj Kaushal passed away earlier today at the age of 73. He was the husband of late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and the father of BJP leader Bansuri Swaraj. The cause of his death has not been revealed yet. His demise has created a profound sense of loss across political, legal and administrative circles.
A distinguished legal and political career
Swaraj Kaushal was widely respected for his sharp legal acumen and decades of public service. A celebrated senior advocate of the Supreme Court, he was designated as a senior lawyer at the remarkably young age of 34, one of the youngest in India to receive this honour.
Kaushal also served as the Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993, during a sensitive and transitional phase in the state’s political history. His tenure was marked by administrative stability and his ability to navigate complex political dynamics.
He was also a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from 1998 to 2004, where he actively contributed to debates on national security, governance and legal reforms. Beyond his formal roles, Kaushal was known for his mentorship of young lawyers and his articulate commentary on constitutional matters.
Personal life and legacy
Married to former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the couple was known for their deep bond and strong public presence. Following Sushma Swaraj’s passing in 2019, Kaushal continued to share heartfelt memories of her, often resonating with the public for their warmth and sincerity.
His daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, entered politics in recent years and frequently acknowledged her father’s influence on her legal and political journey.
Swaraj Kaushal’s last rites will be performed today at 4:30 PM at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in Delhi. Leaders from across party lines are expected to attend and pay tribute to the eminent statesman and legal luminary.
