The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Olympian Sushil Kumar, who is one of the main suspects in the murder of a junior wrestler. The two-time Olympic medalist was arrested by the Delhi police in May 2021.
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted bail to wrestler Sushil Kumar in the Sagar Dhankar murder case. Sushil Kumar was arrested after the murder of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar on May 4, 2021.
Justice Sanjeev Narula approved the bail with the condition that Sushil Kumar provides a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. The detailed order is yet to be uploaded.
Sushil Kumar’s lawyers, R S Malik and Sumeet Shokeen, argued that he has been in jail for over three and a half years. They also pointed out that out of 186 prosecution witnesses, only around 30 have been questioned in the past three years.
About The Murder Case:
Sagar Dhankar died from injuries after being attacked by Sushil Kumar and others in the parking lot of Chhatrasal Stadium, New Delhi, on May 4, 2021. The attack was linked to a property dispute between Kumar and Dhankar. Kumar and his associates attacked Dhankar because he refused to leave a flat that Kumar owned.
In a chargesheet of 170 pages, Delhi Police named Sushil Kumar as the main accused, saying the tensions started because Dhankar wouldn’t vacate the flat and rumors suggested Kumar feared him. Kumar was on the run for more than two weeks before being caught in Mundka, western Delhi. He has been in jail since June 2, 2021.
The dispute began over a flat in Model Town, which Kumar owned and Dhankar had lived in. The problem got worse when Dhankar allegedly insulted Kumar, leading to a violent fight outside the stadium. Dhankar later died from brain injuries caused by blunt force.
Sushil Kumar, the main suspect in the murder, has been granted bail several times. In March 2023, a court allowed him four days of bail for his father’s funeral. He was released from March 6-9, 2023, after paying a Rs 1 lakh bond with two sureties. He was also given bail from July 23-30, 2023, to have knee surgery. After each release, he returned to jail in August 2023.
Sushil Kumar is one of India’s most successful athletes. He won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
