New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea challenging the premature release of former MP Anand Mohan Singh who was serving life imprisonment in the murder case of an IAS officer in 1994.
Uma Krishnaiah, the widow of G Krishnaiah (Murdered IAS) filed a plea in the apex court to which a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala said that it would hear the matter on May 8.
Former Member of Parliament Anand Mohan Singh who was convicted in 1994 murder of District Magistrate G Krishnaiah was released from Saharsa jail in April after the Bihar government tweaked the remission rule for prisoners.
G Krishnaiah, then District Magistrate in Gopalganj District, was killed by a mob allegedly provoked by Anand Mohan. He was sentenced to death by a lower council in 2007. However, the Patna High Court commuted it to life imprisonment. Later, the supreme court upheld the High Court order in 2012.
The Bihar government, earlier this month, removed the clause which forbade the remission of criminals convicted of murdering a public servant on duty.
In its notification, the state government said that the new rules were for prisoners who have served an actual sentence of 14 years or 20 years with remission.
The move to change the rules and Anand Mohan Singh’s release has created a huge controversy with Opposition parties like Bahujan Samaj Party and BJP terming the change as pro-criminals.
