Supreme Court Slams Delhi Coaching Centers as ‘Death Traps,’ Demands Safety Measures

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of the deaths of three civil service aspirants in a Delhi coaching center flood, demanding safety measures and responses from the government.

On Monday, the Supreme Court took suo moto notice of the tragic deaths of three civil service aspirants who drowned in a flooded coaching center basement in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar last month. The bench, led by Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, issued notices to both the central and Delhi governments, requesting their responses.

The bench remarked, ‘These coaching centers have become death traps.’

The court stated, “These institutions should operate online unless they fully fix to safety regulations and fundamental standards for dignified living. They are putting the lives of aspirants, who come from across the country, at risk.”

The Supreme Court also directed the Centre, the Delhi government, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to submit detailed responses regarding the current safety measures. The bench conveyed significant concern for the safety and well-being of students at these coaching centers.

Previously, the Delhi High Court had shifted the investigation from the Delhi Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure transparency and bolster public trust in the inquiry.

On Sunday, students who have been protesting held a candlelight vigil to remember the three civil service aspirants who died. Since the tragic event, students from different coaching centers have been demanding better safety measures. They organized a candle march and gathered in front of the coaching center to honor their friends who lost their lives.
