Supreme Court rejects NEET- PG reschedule

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to entertain a plea to delay the NEET-PG examination, scheduled for this Sunday, August 11. The court said it could not risk the futures of nearly 200,000 students by postponing the test, especially since it had already rescheduled the exam once from its original date of June 23 due to issues with the NEET-UG examination.

The applications by the students who filed the petition said they want another deferment as they are finding it very difficult to reach their allotted examination centers. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences released a list of cities with exam centers on July 31, but it would only reveal the exact locations on August 8. Additionally, the formula for normalizing scores was still pending.

No Delay for NEET-PG Exam

During Friday’s hearing, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices Manoj Misra and JB Pardiwala stated that postponing the exams at such a late stage would be unfair to the students who had already put in significant effort to prepare. “It`s too late to defer the exam now,” the Court said. “We cannot defer the examination just because some students are facing issues. This isn`t a perfect world; delay isn`t always possible.”

The plea filed by Vishal Soren requested the issuance of a writ of Mandamus to the National Testing Agency, asking them to reschedule the NEET-PG 2024 exam. The NEET-PG exam was originally scheduled for June 23 but was postponed by the Union Health Ministry as a precaution due to alleged irregularities in other competitive exams.

The judges underscored that rescheduling the examination would not only affect the 200,000 students appearing for it but also their families, totaling about 400,000 people. In other words, “We cannot risk the careers of so many students for the sake of a few,” the Court added.

This way, the NEET-PG examination would be held as per the schedule, despite all the hassles some of the students would face.
