New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed all prisioners to surrender within 15 days who were released on emergency parole duirng the COVID-19 period, reported LiveLaw.

“All those undertrial prisoners and convicts who have been released on emergency parole /interim bail pursuant to the recommendations of the High Powered Committee in compliance of the orders passed by this Court have to surrender before the concerned prison authorities within 15 days”, ruled a bench consisting of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar.

The bench further said concerned undertrials will start after prisoners and convicts surrender themselves to the concerned prison authorities, adding that the can pray for the bail before the competent court.

In a suo moto case, the Supreme Court in 2020 and 2021 had granted emergency parole to prisioners to avoid overcrowd.
