Supreme court directs Karnataka gov to put hold on decision to scrap muslim quota till May 9

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Karnataka government to put hold on its decision to scrap the four percent quota for Muslims till May 9, the day when the matter will be heard next. The apex court took the decision after the state government sought time to file its reply.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who represented the Karnataka government, said he will be filing the reply today.
He told the court that he is engaged in same-sex marriage hearing so he will file the reply today. He requested the court to put the matter on some other day.
The matter pertains to an announcement by Karnataka’s government which proposed to remove Muslims from the OBC category, subsequently scrapping off the 4% percent reservation.
The Vokkaligas and Lingayats, with eligible Muslims now classified under economically weaker sections, get the reservation equally.
