Supreme Court Addresses Kolkata Rape-Murder Case, Hearing Set For Tuesday

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The case will be heard by a three-judge bench, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, on Tuesday.

Incident Details

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for swift justice.

A petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Saturday, urging it to take cognisance of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The case has triggered widespread protests across the country, with doctors staging demonstrations demanding action and justice.

Arrest and Investigation

In the aftermath of the incident, the police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the police, who is considered the prime suspect. Following concerns over lapses in the initial police investigation, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.
