A student in the third year of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Naya Raipur has been suspended due to allegations by more than 30 female students that he had made digitally altered and obscene photos of them by way of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The student who was living in a hostel and hails from Bilaspur, was studying in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, allegedly created morphed images and videos of female students using AI. The authorities have reportedly recovered more than a thousand images and videos from the student.
This situation came to light after the 36 students reported the accused to the institute on Monday, and the college authorities said they would pursue the case and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
According to NDTV, Registrar Professor Srinivas stated that the college has established a three-member internal committee of women staff members to examine the incident after complaints from female students.
“On October 6, some female students complained about this. Following this, an investigation committee was formed, and some staff members immediately searched the accused student’s room. The student’s laptop, mobile phone, and pen drive were confiscated,” Srinivas said.
College officials announced that the suspected student was found to have more than 1,000 photos and videos of female students on his electronic devices: laptop, phone, and pen drive. Officials are currently collaborating with the cybercrime unit to ascertain whether the sexual material was an artificial intelligence phenomenon and whether any of the material was circulated outside the college.
“Parents of the complaining students are also being interviewed. Further action is being taken to ensure that no personal information is leaked,” he added.
Police Seeking Written Complaint To Initiate Investigation
Ashish Rajput, the officer in command of the Rakhi Police Station, stated that a formal investigation can only commence upon the institute of affected female students submits a written complaint.
“We have spoken to the management of the college and are examining the facts. Once a written complaint is received, a formal investigation will begin,” Ashish Rajput said.
The female students are seeking strict action against the accused. In response to the situation, the college administration has assured the female students and their families that they will take appropriate disciplinary and legal action against the student.
