Despite frigid temperatures plummeting to as low as -20 degrees Celsius, the youth of this remote village are showcasing their passion for the sport on an icy pitch surrounded by majestic snow-clad mountains.

The annual Ice Cricket Tournament has become a beloved tradition in Gurez, attracting participants and spectators alike. This year, the event is particularly poignant as heavy snowfall has cut off the region from the rest of the world, with roads leading from Srinagar to Gurez rendered impassable. Yet, the locals have turned this challenge into an opportunity for community engagement and winter sports celebration.

“We organise this tournament since last three year’s to stay active and turn the most of the snow-covered fields into ice cricket turfs,” said Mehraj Ahmad, one of the local youth. “This is also our way of showing that Gurez can host winter sports events.” The tournament, which gained popularity after videos went viral on social media three years ago, has garnered attention from international cricket players who have praised the initiative and shared it on their platforms.

While the tournament brings joy and camaraderie to the residents of Gurez, it also highlights the pressing need for improved infrastructure and recognition of the area’s potential for winter sports. “While other places are hosting skiing and other events, we are still waiting for the authorities to recognise the potential of this area,” said a resident of Gurez.

Despite the challenges posed by harsh cold weather conditions, the snow cricket tournament serves as a vital source of entertainment and community spirit during the long winter months. “These games keep us busy and help us deal with the challenges of being cut off from rest of the country ,” said Muzamil Ahmad, another local resident.

As Gurez Valley continues to embrace its winter wonderland, the Ice Cricket Tournament unfolds against this stunning winter landscape. It stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of Gurez’s people, who continue to thrive despite the challenges posed by their remote and icy environment.
