In a disturbing incident from Odisha, a 45-year-old theatre actor performing the role of a demon in the Ramayana allegedly ate pig’s raw meat on stage after ripping its stomach live on stage. The incident which reportedly took place in Odisha’s Ganjam district has triggered a statewide outrage. The shocking and bizarre incident on November 24 in Ralab village in the Hinjili police station area was condemned in the assembly on Monday.
The police has arrested the theatre actor for his abhorrent act, along with one more actor named Bimbadhar Gouda. According to reports, Gouda was one of the organisers of the play and he has been booked for cruelty towards animals and violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The alarming act was strongly criticised by the ruling BJP members Babu Singh and Sanatan Bijuli in the state assembly. After the videos of the incident went viral on social media, the animal right activists called for stringent action against the accused.
To capture audience’s attention, the theatre group even displayed snakes during the play while a demon ripped the stomach of a pig using a knife. The animal was tied to the ceiling of the stage and was displayed in full public view, reports added.
“We are also looking for the persons who displayed snakes in the theatre. They will also be arrested soon,” TOI quoted Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sunny Khokar as saying.
