Kolkata is the most congested city, followed by Bengaluru in 2024, according to a Dutch-based traffic index. The report added that commuters in Kolkata needed an average of around 34 minutes and 33 seconds to cover 10 kilometers, while in Bengaluru it takes 34 minutes and 10 seconds.
The average speed of both cities is also almost similar. “17.4 kmph is the average speed of Kolkata, while 17.6 kmph is Bengaluru,” added the report released by TomTom.
Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune featured in the top five for the slowest average speed (18 kmph). Barranquilla tops for the slowest speed, as it takes 36 minutes to cover 10 km at an average speed of 10.3 kmph.
Other congested cities in India are Hyderabad (32 minutes), Chennai (30 minutes), and Mumbai (29 minutes), with an average travel time of 10 kilometres.
However, the national capital of India, which is considered to be one of the most populated cities, has a much lower travel time of around 23 minutes for 10 kilometres.
By analysing both static and dynamic factors, the report offers a comprehensive view of traffic patterns and congestion. “Static factors, such as road infrastructure and urban design, combine with dynamic influences like peak-hour traffic and weather conditions to shape urban mobility,” added the report.
Ralf-Peter Schäfer, Vice President of Traffic at TomTom, explained that outdated infrastructure, inefficient road planning, and the growing demands of urbanization have increased traffic congestion. For sustainable transportation solutions to address these challenges.
