The political scenario in Maharashtra must surely have given a sense of familiar feeling to the BJP. Five years after Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena alleged an ‘agreed-upon deal’ with the BJP over a rotational Chief Ministership, Eknath Shinde’s faction of Shiv Sena now claims a similar ‘deal’. The deal asserted the ‘Top Post’ for Shinde if the Mahayuti alliance won the 2024 assembly elections.
Shinde’s Close Ally Claims ‘There Was A Clear Agreement’
According to TOI reports, Shiv Sena leader close to caretaker CM Eknath Shinde has claimed that, after the Lok Sabha elections, there was a clear agreement that Shinde would assume the chief minister’s role if the Mahayuti won the assembly elections.
The Shiv Sena leader further alleged that after the Lok Sabha poll results, a series of strategy meetings were held where it was decided that ‘BJP would contest the maximum number of seats, followed by Shiv Sena and NCP.’
TOI quoted The Shiv Sena Leader as saying, “But Irrespective of the number of seats if the Mahayuti constituents win, Shinde will continue to be the CM if Mahayuti secures a clear majority.”
BJP Wants Fadnavis To Lead The New Govt
With 57 seats in the assembly elections, Shiv Sena has been making a strong pitch for Shinde’s continuity at the top, however, the BJP, with 132 seats, only 12 short of the halfway mark in the 288-member assembly, is firm about its stance to make Devendra Fadnavis the new CM of Maharashtra.
BJP Leaders Reject Sena’s Contentions
Reports revealed that the BJP leaders have rejected Shiv Sena’s Contentions and that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reportedly made it clear during the elections that despite Mahayuti contesting the assembly polls under Shinde’s leadership, in the event of it getting a majority, the new CM would be decided by BJP’s parliamentary board and Shiv Sena and NCP top leaders.
