Shift In Kashmir’s Seperatist Politics: Four Groups Left Hurriyat Alliance And Give Up On Separatism In Just Two Days

In a significant shift in Kashmir's separatist politics, four groups have recently distanced themselves from the Hurriyat Conference, marking a notable departure from separatism.

In a major shift from separatist politics, four groups in the Kashmir Valley have severed their ties with the Hurriyat Conference, an amalgamation of separatist parties, and pledged their allegiance to the Union of India. This development comes just days after a surge in police action against separatist groups operating in the Kashmir Valley.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed this development as a sign that separatism in Jammu and Kashmir is “on its last breath.” In a tweet, Shah stated, “Under the Modi government, separatism is breathing its last, and the triumph of unity is echoing across Kashmir.” He urged other groups to follow suit and abandon their separatist agendas.

This wave of realignment comes amid intensified actions by Jammu and Kashmir Police against proscribed separatist organizations. Recent raids targeting the residences of prominent Hurriyat leaders and activists are part of ongoing investigations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). In a span of just two days, four separatist groups, including the JK Democratic Political Movement, JK Peoples Movement, JK Tahreeqi Isteqlal and JK Tahreek-I-Istiqamat announced their departure from the Hurriyat Conference.

Ghulam Nabi Sofi, leader of Tehreek-e-Istiqlal, declared his commitment to India and the Indian Constitution, stating, “Neither in the past have I been associated with any act that is detrimental to the interests of India nor do I or my organization intend to be a part of any group that works against India in the future.”

The recent developments reflect a broader trend towards mainstream politics, as many separatist leaders face legal challenges and imprisonment on charges related to funding terrorist activities. The police have conducted extensive searches at the residences of separatist leaders, including former Hurriyat chairman Prof Abdul Gani Bhat and Shabir Ahmad Shah, who is currently in Tihar Jail.

Searches are being conducted targeting residences, shops and premises of individuals suspected of having links with banned organisations in Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara and other areas.

In Srinagar, the searches were conducted after obtaining search warrants from the Special Judge of NIA court Srinagar. Following legal procedures all searches were carried out in the presence of Executive Magistrates.

Authorities have emphasized that these operations aim to dismantle the remnants of secessionist networks in Jammu and Kashmir, with strict legal consequences for those found promoting violence or disruption.
