Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, made her first public statement on Tuesday since fleeing the country. In her message, she described the coup against the Awami League as a severe insult to her father, the founding President of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the countless martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The Awami League chief also urged the people of Bangladesh to observe National Mourning Day on August 15, in memory of her father’s assassination. She encouraged the nation to mark the day with dignity and solemnity by offering prayers and floral tributes at Bangabandhu Bhavan.
