The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil from the party after he was accused of sexual misconduct against women. Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan told reporters in Thrissur on August 25, 2025, that this disciplinary action was taken. However, KPCC has not yet released an official statement about the suspension. KPCC president Sunny Joseph has called a press conference in Kannur at noon. The action came days after he stepped down as Kerala Youth Congress president following mounting pressure from within the party and outside. Will he resign from Palakkad MLA post?
Due to suspension, he will have to sit in a separate block during the assembly session beginning on September 15. However, it is expected that Rahul may take leave and avoid attending the session. The KPCC will also seek a written explanation from him regarding the allegations. If his response is found unsatisfactory, the party is likely to proceed with his expulsion.

Will Congress Ask His Resignation From MLA Post?
Congress leader Muraleedharan said it is now up to Rahul Mamkootathil to decide whether he should continue as an MLA from Palakkad. He explained that after suspension, Rahul no longer has the political support of the KPCC. This suspension is only the second step in the disciplinary action, and stronger measures may follow. If more sexual misconduct complaints come up, the party could even ask him to resign as MLA.

Rahul Mamkootathil has not given a clear answer about whether he will resign. Muraleedharan added that the KPCC will give him a chance to explain himself and will also check whether the allegations are true.
He further said that Rahul still has the option to resign voluntarily. The Congress is not worried about a by-election at the end of the Pinarayi Vijayan government’s term, since in Palakkad the main contest is only between the Congress and the BJP.
Actress, Model Rini Ann George On Rahul Mamkootathil
After actress Rini Ann George and trans woman Avantika spoke about their bad experiences, many others also made allegations against Rahul. The central leadership received several complaints as well. Following this, Rahul resigned as the state president of the Youth Congress. Some leaders felt he should also resign as an MLA, but for now, the party decided only to suspend him from its membership. Rahul has clearly said he will not resign as an MLA.
The party says this is just the beginning of action against him. First, he resigned from the Youth Congress president post. Now, he has been suspended from the Congress’ primary membership, which means he will also be suspended from the parliamentary party.
