In a significant development, Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Vivek Tankha has hinted that some of India’s top legal heavyweights may appear in the Supreme Court to oppose Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah. This move comes in the wake of the minister’s controversial statement, which has been widely condemned as derogatory, sexist, and communal, targeting Colonel Sofia Qureshi. According to his post, Kapil Sibal, Indira Jaising, and KTS Tulsi will stand with Vivek Tankha in court against Vijay Shah.
India was shocked when Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah made derogatory, communal, and sexist remarks about Colonel Sophia Qureshi in connection with India’s Sindoori Operation. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and another officer, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, have been the face of the army during the media conferences on Operation Sindoor. Both have frequently joined Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during the briefings.
Kunwar Vijay Shah, the tribal affairs minister and BJP leader, made a controversial statement that caught the court’s attention. The statement was derogatory, sexist and communal. A division bench of Justices Atul Shridharan and Anuradha Shukla took suo motu cognisance of the issue and ordered the police to take action against Shah. They directed the police to register an FIR by 6 pm on Wednesday.
In another move, Rajya Sabha MP and Lawyer Vivek Tankha posted, ” If Vijay Shah’s appeal is mentioned in the Supreme Court and a hearing takes place, then Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Vivek Tankha, Kapil Sibal, Indira Jaising, and KTS Tulsi will stand in court against Vijay Shah.”

FIR Against Minister
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also instructed officials to take action against the minister. On Wednesday evening, the police registered the FIR against Kunwar Vijay Shah at the Manpur police station in Indore Rural, under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police.
What The High Court Said
The Jabalpur High Court bench of Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Shukla lashed out at Mr Shah for using “language of the gutters” against a senior Indian Army officer.
Terming the comments “dangerous” and “disparaging”, the judges said they were also prima facie offences under two stringent sections of Indian law.
The Bench expressed concern that such a statement “encourages feelings of separatist activities by imputing separatist feeling to anyone who is Muslim,” thereby violating the constitutional spirit of unity and fraternity.
