External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar exchanged greetings with Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif after his arrival in Islamabad on Tuesday. Both the leaders met cordially and shook hands with each other. Reportedly, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had hosted a dinner for leaders ahead of the 23rd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
EAM S Jaishankar was warmly received at the Nur Khan airbase and was presented bouquets of flowers by children dressed in traditional costumes. A red carpet was laid out to welcome the guests and foreign dignitaries.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan earlier informed on X that External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar has landed in Islamabad to attend SCO-CHG summit. It said, “External Affairs Minister of the Republic of India, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has arrived in Islamabad for the 23rd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He was received at Nur Khan Airbase by Director General ( South Asia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ilyas Mehmood Nizami.”

Pakistan is hosting the 23rd meeting of SCO-CHG in Islamabad from 15-16th October 2024. Pakistan had received the chair on rotational basis at a meeting held on Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan on October 26, 2023. Pakistan on X said that it is a strong proponent of the SCO Charter and an active participant in SCO meetings and events. Pakistan had become a member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2017.
Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is said to be the second highest forum within SCO. The two-day meeting from 15-16th October will be chaired by Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif as current chair of the Council.
Notably, this is the first visit of any Indian Foreign Minister to Pakistan in last 9 years. Late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj was the last EAM to visit Pakistan in 2015.
EAM S Jaishankar also informed about his arrival in Islamabad on X. He wrote, “Landed in Islamabad to take part in SCO Council of Heads of Government Meeting.”

Earlier when asked about his scheduled visit to Pakistan, Jaishankar had said that it will be a multilateral event and he will not discuss India-Pak relations there. “I am not going there to discuss India-Pakistan relations. I’m going there to be a good member of the SCO. But, you know, since I’m a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly,” he added.
