The hustle and bustle of school life returned to Kashmir on Friday as all government and privately recognized educational institutions reopened their doors after a prolonged winter break that lasted over three months. The excitement was palpable as buses filled with students began plying the roads early in the morning, while many parents accompanied their little ones, particularly those in kindergarten, on their first day back at school.
The winter vacations, which began on December 10, 2024, were originally scheduled to end on March 1, 2025. However, due to recent snowfall and adverse weather conditions, the break was extended by several days, ensuring that students could return to a safe and conducive learning environment.

As schools welcomed back their students, many were adorned with decorations, and small celebrations marked the occasion. The return to school brought joy to students who had felt confined at home for too long. “I am very excited that the schools are re-opening. I am more excited to meet my friends and teachers after such a long time,” exclaimed qurat shabir, a student at a private school. Another student, Afreen, shared her sentiments, stating, “While the vacations were needed and staying at home was fun, school has a charm of its own.”
Teachers echoed the students’ enthusiasm. Rabua Bukhari, a teacher at a government higher secondary school, expressed her delight at being back among his colleagues and students. “Winter vacations also give students a huge time to study, and we hope they have used it productively. We are now looking forward to the new session,” she said.
In contrast, authorities in Gurez Valley, located in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, announced an extension of winter vacations for all schools until March 8 due to heavy snowfall and challenging weather conditions in the area.

The winter break for schools in the Kashmir division and winter zones of the Jammu division was officially declared by the government on December 6 last year, implemented in two phases. Classes for students up to grade five commenced their break on December 10, while higher classes followed suit on December 16.
As temperatures in the valley often plunge below freezing and vast stretches remain blanketed in snow during winter months, schools typically remain closed for around three months. However, with the arrival of spring and improved weather conditions, students are now ready to embrace a new academic session filled with learning and growth.
