The Kerala state government has confirmed the Christmas vacation schedule for schools, granting students an extended 12-day holiday this year. According to the General Education Department, schools will remain closed from December 24, 2025, and will reopen on January 5, 2026.
Change Due to Local Body Elections
The revised schedule comes after adjustments to the half-yearly examination timetable caused by the local body elections held on December 9 and 11, 2025. Originally, half-yearly exams were scheduled from December 11-18, with Christmas holidays starting on December 19 and schools reopening on December 29.
Because the polling days coincided with two exam dates, the Education Department postponed the examinations. Now, exams will begin on December 15 and conclude on December 23, with schools closing the following day.
12 Day Winter Holidays In Kerala
This year’s Christmas break is two days longer than the usual 10-day holiday. With weekends included, students typically attend classes for only half of December. The election-related adjustments have further increased the number of days off, giving students extra time to rest and celebrate the festive season.
Additional Holidays for Special Schools
Schools that are designated as centres for storing or distributing voting machines may receive extra holidays depending on administrative requirements. These measures ensure that educational schedules and electoral responsibilities are managed smoothly without disrupting student learning.
Circular Issued to School Authorities
The General Education Department has circulated an official circular detailing the updated schedule. The notice has been sent to Deputy Directors of Education, Regional Directors, DIET principals, district and sub-district education officers, and all school heads. The department has urged school authorities to strictly follow the revised schedule and inform parents and students about the changes.
Kerala’s updated Christmas vacation schedule for the 2025-26 academic year balances examination rescheduling due to elections while providing students a longer holiday to enjoy the festive season safely. Schools will resume classes on January 5, 2026, ensuring continuity in the academic calendar after the extended break.
