School Holiday, October 23, Thursday: Most states are observing Bhai Dooj today, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Due to the post-Diwali festivities, including Govardhan Puja and Chhath, most schools in northern India will remain closed today as well.
The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the Diwali holidays, keeping schools closed until 23 October 2025. Parents and students are advised to check official school notifications for holiday updates. Students will enjoy a five-day break covering all major celebrations—Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. Many schools had also started announcing holidays from Monday, 13 October.
Rajasthan schools will remain closed till October 24, 2025, and schools in the Jammu division will observe holidays from October 19 to November 2. The classes will resume on November 3, 2025.
Which States have Schools shut?
Most of the Schools in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar are closed from 13 October 2025 due to regional festivals and government events. Schools in Rajasthan have the longest holiday break of about 12 days. Karnataka students will enjoy a 10-day vacation. In Bihar, schools will stay closed for both Diwali and Chhath Puja celebrations.
Diwali Vacation 2025 for Schools in Rajasthan
As per the Education Department’s order, Diwali holidays have begun across Rajasthan. This year, the holidays will run from October 13 to October 24, giving students and teachers a total of 12 days off. Since October 12 is a Sunday, the Diwali vacation in schools will officially start from October 13.
UP School Holiday
The Uttar Pradesh Education Department has announced that schools in the state will be closed for Diwali from October 20 to October 23. Since October 19 is a Sunday, students will get a total of five days off in a row.
Schools across Uttar Pradesh, both government and private, will observe a five-day holiday from October 19 to 23, 2025, covering major festivals like Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. The official break begins on Monday, October 20, and ends on Thursday, October 23, while the total holiday period, including the preceding Sunday, spans five consecutive days. This celebratory break applies to the entire state, allowing students to enjoy the festivities with their families.
Bihar School Holiday
In Bihar, Diwali holidays will start on October 18 and continue for several days. After Diwali, preparations for Chhath Puja will begin, during which schools will remain closed as well.
Diwali Holidays in Delhi and Gurugram
Schools in Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida were closed from October 19 to 23, 2025, for Diwali. Some schools may extend the holidays until October 28 to include Chhath Puja. Parents are advised to check official school notices to know the exact reopening dates.
Rain in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh – Schools closed in TN
Apart from the festivities, some of the states are experiencing heavy rain, and they have declared a holiday for schools on October 22. As per official orders, schools in some districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been asked to stay closed on Wednesday as the region has been experiencing heavy rainfall. However, if the heavy rain continues, the states will declare a holiday on October 23 also. IMD has predicted rain on Thursday.
Though the survey began on September 22, due to various reasons, the officials weren’t able to end the survey last week. Therefore, the Chief Minister and his cabinet have decided to extend the survey period by 10 days, during which no academic activities will be conducted in schools.
