New Delhi: The Supreme Court Wednesday assented to hear a plea filed by Bilkis Bano, who was sexually assaulted by a group of men during the 2022 Gujarat Riots. The petition challenged the remission of sentence of the 11 convicts in the matter.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud along with Justices PS Narsimha and JB Pardiwala ruled that a new bench will be constitued to hear the matter.
Appearing for the petitioner, Shobha Gupta asked for an urgent hearing of the matter. She asked for forming a new bench, which was assrued by the top court.

“I will have a bench constituted. Will look at it this evening,” said the CJI.
On January 24, the top court could not take up Bilkis Bano’s plea as the bench was hearing a case pertaineda to passive euthanasia as part of a five-judge Constitution bench.
Premature Release of 11 Convicts
Bano’s plea challenged the pre-mature release of the 11 convicts based on the order of the Gujarat government.
The gang-rape survivor had filed another petition to seek review on the apex courts’ order delivered on May 13, 2022, on a plea filed by one of the convicts.

The case of Bilkis Bano pertains to sexual assault with her, when she was 19 with a three-year-old daughter and pregnant with second child. Seven family members of her family were brutally killed in front of her.
