IIT-Guwahati Protests: A huge protest broke out on IIT-Guwahati campus last evening, as protesters claimed that at the institute, grades are more important than student’s lives. In the fourth such incident this year, a student from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room in IIT-Guwahati. There are also allegations that students were barred from forcing open the door of the hostel room where the body was first found.
As reported by NDTV, a student said that they were not allowed to intimate the family of the deceased student and the administration tried deleting videos from the mobiles.
They Didn’t Care If He Was Alive Or Not: IIT-Guwahati Student
“I saw my friend hanging from the fan through the ventilator. The guards did not let us break the door. It took some 30 minutes for the door to open. They didn’t seem to care if he was alive or not, the student said on grounds of anonymity.
The student said that once the door was finally opened, security personnel did not allow the nurse to check the student’s pulse.
“We lost him, but the body wasn’t taken down until eight hours later,” the student added.
The student further said the guards did nothing on orders of the administration.
Students Were Stopped From Telling The Student’s Family
“The dean and the chairperson of the Hostel Affairs Board stopped us from telling the student’s family and tried to delete video evidence,” the student said. The institute has yet to react to these accusations.
The incident triggered a huge protest as students raised questions on the efficiency of the institute’s mental health and welfare support system. The student’s body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem.
