Rising Casualties: Punjab Hooch Disaster Reaches 21 Deaths With More Hospitalizations

On Wednesday, March 20, four people reportedly died after drinking fake alcohol, and others went to the hospital. The next day, four more people died while being treated at Patiala's Rajindra Hospital. Additionally, eight deaths happened on Friday, March 22, and five more on the following day, making the total death toll 21.

The number of fatalities linked to the suspected consumption of counterfeit alcohol in Punjab's Sangrur district has risen to 21 people, according to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Sangrur. Around 40 individuals have been hospitalized after consuming fake liquor containing ethanol.

Police arrested two more suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to six in connection with the case. During interrogation, the detained suspects disclosed to the police that the hazardous alcohol was being produced in a residence. Acting on this intelligence, law enforcement authorities conducted a raid on the house and took away 200 liters of dangerous ethanol. Additionally, two more individuals have been apprehended in connection with the case. Investigations are ongoing, and those found responsible will be duly punished, as stated by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Harcharan Singh Bhullar. Additionally, the Punjab government has established a "high-level" Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter further.

Punjab police announced the committee

The Punjab Police took to X and announced that they have established a High-level Committee to oversee the systematic investigation of the connections involved in this matter. A specialized four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by ADGP Law & Order Gurinder Dhillon IPS, alongside DIG Patiala Range Harcharan Bhullar IPS, SSP Sangrur Sartaj Chahal IPS, and Additional Commissioner (Excise) Naresh Dubey, will oversee the inquiry.
