NARI 2025 Report: Nearly 40 percent of women in India feel “unsafe” or “not so safe” in urban areas, reveals a National Index report on women’s safety. The report is based on 12,770 women across 31 states in India. It stated that around 7 percent of women aged 18 to 24 are subject to harassment in 2024. Delhi and Kolkata are the least safe cities in India, the report added. Ranchi, Srinagar, and Faridabad are also mentioned.
Mumbai, Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, and Itanagar are considered to be the safest places. The harassment included staring, catcalling, lewd comments, and touching on the streets. Inadequate infrastructure, poor lighting, and inefficient public transport were blamed, according to HT.
The Index also added that only 22 percent of the women surveyed reported their experiences to authorities. while 53 percent were unclear whether POSH policy is mandated in their office.
Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, released the report, done by Pvalue Analytics and published by the Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA).
The launch of NARI 2023 is a step forward in understanding the safety concerns of women in our cities. At the National Commission for Women, our priority is to ensure that every woman feels safe at home, at work, in public places, and online,” Rahatkar said at the launch event in Delhi. “We hope these findings will guide governments, corporates, and communities to take focused steps to improve women’s safety in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047,'” said Prahallad Rout, MD, Pvalue Analytics, as quoted by HT.
