At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, indirectly criticized Pakistan, saying that if cross-border activities involve extremism and separatism, they will harm trade and relations between countries.

He emphasized that peace and stability are essential for growth, and when terrorism, extremism, and separatism are present, they stop trade, energy cooperation, and cultural exchanges from happening.

Importance of Fighting Terrorism and Building Cooperation

Jaishankar stressed that fighting terrorism, separatism, and extremism is the SCO’s main goal and is more important than ever today. He encouraged open discussions, trust, and good relations between neighboring countries, reminding everyone of their commitment to the SCO Charter.

Promoting True Partnerships Based on Mutual Respect

Speaking at the SCO meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the need for cooperation based on mutual respect, equality, and respecting each country’s borders. He said cooperation should be based on genuine partnerships, not selective global practices, especially in trade and transit.

India’s Efforts for Global Sustainability

Jaishankar also spoke about India’s efforts to promote sustainability, mentioning initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE (which promotes eco-friendly lifestyles), and the Global Biofuel Alliance.

Global Challenges and the Need for Regional Cooperation

He acknowledged the difficult global situation, referencing two major conflicts and the struggles many developing countries face after the COVID-19 pandemic. He called for stronger trust, friendship, and regional cooperation as the way forward.

India’s Support for Pakistan’s SCO Leadership

Jaishankar congratulated Pakistan on its leadership of the SCO and said India fully supports a successful presidency. Although it was the first visit by a senior Indian official to Pakistan in nearly a decade, no bilateral talks are planned between India and Pakistan during the summit.
