Early on Saturday, four students from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, lost their lives when the Ford Endeavour they were driving at high speed collided with another SUV and crashed into a tree on the Bhadson road.
At 2 am, police reported that the four students, all in their early twenties, were returning from a dinner party when the accident happened just 50 meters away from the university on the Patiala-Bhadson road.
Officials identified the deceased as Reet Kaur Virk, Ishan Sood, Rishabh Sehgal, and Kushagra Yadav. Reet is the daughter of retired Major RS Virk based in Chandigarh, while Ishan is the nephew of Chandigarh BJP leader and former mayor Arun Sood.
After colliding with the Isuzu pickup, the driver of the Ford Endeavour, carrying the four victims, lost control. The four occupants of the Ford Endeavour were killed instantly, while the Isuzu pickup overturned, but the two students inside survived the accident.
University officials stated that four out of the six students were in their final year, while the remaining two were third-year students. They mentioned that the final exam of the academic session for the final year students had ended on Friday.
Upon arriving at the accident site, Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh urged students to refrain from drinking and driving.
Government Rajindra Hospital and police sources reported that the parents of the deceased students declined an inquiry and post-mortem examination, resulting in the bodies being released to them.
