Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Line: The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag New Broad-gauge railway Rail line project is gaining momentum. The railway line, which is expected to enhance connectivity in Uttarakhand, is making significant progress. The project aims to improve transportation, increase tourism, and boost the economy and infrastructure in the region. The railway line will run from Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway station in Rishikesh to Karnaprayag in the Garhwal region.
About The Project
Rishikesh- Karnaprayag Railway Line project is a 125.20 km single-track railway line under construction in Uttarakhand with 12 stations. The project is executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). It is being undertaken by Indian Railways through the Northern Railways zone.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 16,200 crore.

What Benefits Will Railway Line Bring To Uttarakhand?
The railway line is going to benefit the residents of Uttarakhand on several fronts. It will reduce the travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag from 7 hours to just over 2 hours. This cut in travel time will enhance connectivity to major tourist destinations of the state. It will make it easier for both locals and visitors to travel across the region.
Additionally, the railway is expected to create over 2000 jobs benefitting the youngsters.
One of the salient features of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line is that it will help improve connectivity to the Char Dham shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath in the Garhwal region.
The 105.47 km route of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line will include 35 bridges and 17 tunnels, with a 15.1 km tunnel between Devprayag and Lachmoli, one of the longest in India.
The number of stations in this railway line has been fixed to 12 which are Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti, Shivpuri, Manjilgaon, Sakni, Devprayag, Kirtinagar, Srinagar, Dhari, Rudraprayag, Gholtir, Ghauchar, and Karanprayag.
Yog Nagri Rishikesh station is the first station of Rishikesh-Karnaprayag New Rail Line and was opened on 11 January 2021 for passenger trains. It has all the modern facilities of an Adarsh Station eg. lift, ramps, escalators.
Latest Update On Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Line
Ministry of Railways on September, 2024 mentioned that currently, work is underway on the construction of 11 stations along the route. Tunnel construction has also made notable advancements, with 176 kilometers completed out of the total 213 kilometers planned.
