Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will experience significant disruptions from January 19 to January 26, 2025, as it will be closed for flights for 145 minutes each day. The closure will occur daily between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM to facilitate preparations for the Republic Day celebrations, including practice for the flypast and other events.
Impact On Flights
This annual closure is expected to affect over 1,300 flights, requiring many airlines to reschedule their operations. The airport authority, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has issued a notice informing passengers about the situation. During this period, no flights will be allowed to take off or land at the airport, including non-scheduled and chartered flights from 10:00 AM to 1:15 PM12.
Ongoing Weather Challenges
The situation is further complicated by the ongoing fog season in Delhi, which has already caused numerous flight delays and cancellations. Recent reports indicated that more than 400 flights were delayed due to poor visibility conditions, with many others being diverted1. Officials have noted that the combination of fog and the scheduled airport closure could lead to additional challenges in managing flight schedules during this busy time.
Traffic Restrictions
In addition to flight disruptions, there will also be traffic restrictions in central Delhi during the Republic Day preparations. Key roads around Kartavya Path will be closed or restricted during specific hours, prompting authorities to advise commuters to plan their travel accordingly.
Republic Day Celebrations
The Republic Day event on January 26 is a significant occasion in India, showcasing the nation’s military strength and cultural heritage. This year, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to be the chief guest at the celebrations, which will include a grand parade featuring military displays and cultural tableaux from various states.
Passengers planning to travel through Delhi Airport during this period are encouraged to stay updated on flight schedules and traffic advisories to minimize inconvenience.
