Relief For Commuters! No ‘Delhi Chalo’ March On Tuesday, Farmers Say ‘If PM Modi…’

Farmers have decided not to resume their planned 'Delhi Chalo' march on Tuesday, as confirmed by farm leader Sarwan Singh Pandher.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced on Monday that no group of farmers will resume their march to Delhi on Tuesday. The announcement came after two attempts by farmers under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha to march on foot to the national capital on December 6 and 8 were blocked by Haryana security personnel.

Speaking to the media at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, Pandher accused the BJP-led Centre of being “confused” after the farmers decided to continue their protest by marching on foot to Delhi.

“Now central minister Manohal Lal Khattar is saying farmers should come by other vehicles. When Khattar was the chief minister of Haryana, he used to say that farmers should come on foot. Earlier, the entire BJP was objecting to farmers going by tractor trolleys to Delhi. The government is confused on what to say and what not to say. This is lowering the credibility of the government among people,” PTI quoted Pandher as saying at Shambhu border.

Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar said of farmers’ protest,” Nobody is stopping them from going to Delhi but there is a way. There is no gain in doing such a kind of protest.” Farmer leader Pandher slammed Khattar for his statement.

“Khattar is saying there is no bar on farmers going to Delhi and they can come by using other vehicles. When he was the chief minister he used to say that farmers should give up tractor trolleys and come on foot,”. he said.

“We will be listening to the speech of PM, who is visiting Panipat on Monday afternoon. We will see if he says something about the farmers.. We also need to take care of the health of three critical farmers who got injured on Sunday,” he said.

Farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, located between Punjab and Haryana, since February 13, after their initial attempt to march to Delhi was halted by security forces.

Their demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, debt waivers, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
