New Delhi: The central government Thursday informed the Supreme Court that the former is ready to conduct Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir anytime soon.
The Centre made the submission through Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in the apex court. Further, the central government added that there are three elections which are yet to take place.
For the first time, the three-tier Panchayat Raj system is introduced. First, elections would be for Panchayats. Leh Hill Development Council elections are over and that for Kargil will be held in September.
Hearing Article 370 Abrogation
During the hearing, the Centre also mentioned about giving statehood status to Jammu and Kashmir, saying that the tag of Union Territory would not be permanent.
However, they said, no specific dates can be given for that but the work is underway to make Jammu and Kashmir a seperate state.
The court was hearing the arguments over a plea challenging the abrogation of Article 370. It should be noted that Jammu and Kashmir is in President’s rule since 2018 and the last government there was People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti.
