New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that they were ready to file an FIR against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. But there should be a preliminary inquiry into the matter first.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, told the apex court that the authorities intended to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the matter first. “If the Supreme Court feels that direct FIR has to be registered, it will be done,” he added. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed the court, “We have filed the affidavit in this as certain developments have taken place.”
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha listed the petition for hearing on Friday.
The development comes a day after the apex court issued notice to the Delhi Police and others on a plea by seven women wrestlers seeking registration of an FIR against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Sibal said seven wrestlers, including a minor, have accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment, but no FIR has been registered so far despite the law being very clear on this aspect.
Allegations
The case pertains to sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh. Apart from that, the wrestlers have alleged that “WFI knows nothing about the Wrestling” and all athletes have to struggle for basic help and facilities.
The agitated wrestlers have claimed that there are seven women who have accused the BJP MP of sexual abuse and one of the victim is just 16 years old who has reportedly won a gold medal. Submitting to the court earlier in the day, senior Advocate Kapil Sibal siad “There are video recordings to prove allegations of sexual assault.”
