How Shantanu Naidu Met Ratan Tata Through ‘Motopaws’
Shantanu Naidu, who later became Tata’s assistant, also loved dogs. When he saw many street dogs being hit by cars in Pune, he wanted to do something. He and his friend made reflective collars for the dogs so they could be seen from a distance, calling the project ‘Motopaws.’ A friend suggested that Ratan Tata, who loved dogs, might be interested in the idea. Naidu wrote to Tata, and to his surprise, Tata responded, inviting him to discuss the project.
Tata not only supported ‘Motopaws,’ but the initiative grew into a larger project, saving many dogs across 11 cities. Naidu later became the youngest General Manager in Tata’s office.
Choosing His Dogs Over a Royal Award
In 2018, Tata was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive a lifetime achievement award from Prince Charles (now King Charles III) for his charity work. However, Tata canceled his trip at the last moment because one of his dogs was very sick. Even though it was an important event, Tata refused to leave his dog. Prince Charles admired Tata’s commitment to his values when he learned why Tata couldn’t attend.
Bombay House: A Home for Stray Dogs
Ratan Tata’s love for dogs was also seen at Bombay House, the headquarters of the Tata Group. One day, he saw a stray dog struggling in the rain outside the building and decided to let stray dogs enter freely. In 2018, a special kennel was built inside Bombay House, with comfortable beds and attendants to care for the dogs. Many strays now find shelter there.
