A few days after her arrest at Bengaluru Airport for a gold smuggling case, Kannada actress Ranya Rao admitted to the crime. She told the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) that she had traveled not only to Dubai, but also to Europe, America, and the Middle East.
Ranya Rao’s first official statement given to the DRI, where she admitted that the authorities found 17 gold bars with her. However, the Kannada actress has not provided more details to the authorities and asked for time to “take some rest,” according to India Today.
Authorities had been keeping a close watch on Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, because of her frequent trips to Dubai. Reports say she traveled to the city 30 times in the past year, with four trips in just 15 days, and is suspected of smuggling kilos of gold during each trip.
In her statement during questioning, Ranya Rao said, “I admit that 17 gold bars were found with me. I ask that you keep everything as private as possible.”
The Kannada actress also mentioned that she had traveled to many countries. “I have been to Europe, America, and the Middle East, including Dubai and Saudi Arabia. I want to say that I am tired because I haven’t had enough rest,” she said.
Ranya Rao also said that she would fully cooperate with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in the investigation. She explained that no one forced her to speak and that she gave her statement willingly, India Today reported.
“I have nothing more to state. I once again reiterate that I will co-operate in the ongoing investigation and I shall appear before you as and when called for. During the recording of this statement no religious sentiments were hurt. I have been offered food and beverages from time to time, but I chose not to eat as I am not hungry and was drinking water. This statement of mine is given voluntarily without any force, threat, coercion or inducement and in my normal state of mind. The contents of this statement are read over and the contents are as deposed by me,” the actor told DRI.

The DRI reported that gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore were seized from Ranya Rao at Kempegowda International Airport. After that, searches were done at her house, where they found gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in Indian currency.
