The Parliament session on Monday witnessed heated argument between the opposition and the government. The uproar in both houses, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, erupted due to a statement by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader DK Shivakuamar on Muslim reservation. Talking to News24, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla denied the allegation made by the government on the issue. He stated that DK Shivakumar did not say that the Constitution would be amended to provide reservation. Shukla stressed that Congress talks about saving the constitution, while it is the BJP that talks about changing it.
What Did MP Shukla Say?
He emphasised that even Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge clarified on the floor that Congress is the protector (Rakshak) of the Constitution. He further added that DK Shivakumar had stated that the 4% reservation is for the backward classes and minorities, including Muslims and others.
Notably, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had demanded an explanation from the Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Congress’ position on reservation for Muslims. Rijiju said, “I want a clear-cut reply from the Congress president who is sitting in the House. He should make his position and tell the House as well as the people of India why the Congress party want to change the Constitution to provide reservations to Muslims.”
In a response to Rijiju, Kharge said that Congress took up the Bharat Jodo Yatra to protect the Constitution. He reiterated that no one can change the Constitution drafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar.
“Nobody can change the Constitution drafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar. Nobody can finish the reservation. To protect it, we did the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. They (NDA) break India,” Kharge added.
