The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday announced by-elections to fill four Rajya Sabha Seats in Jammu and Kashmir and one seat in Punjab. The voting is scheduled to be held on October 24, 2025. The counting will also take place on the same day, an hour after polling ends. The four seats in J&K have been lying vacant since 2021.

The four seats in Jammu and Kashmir were left vacant in 2021 after BJP MP Shamsher Singh, PDP MPs Mir Mohammad Fayaz and Nazir Ahmed Laway, and Ex-Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad’s tenure ended. The elections on these could not be conducted earlier due to the imposition of President’s rule until October 2024. Despite EC holding Rajya Sabha polls for six other seats last year, J&K was excluded.
Meanwhile, the seat in Punjab was emptied in July after the resignation of MP Sanjeev Arora.
